Welcoming the Wombats to the Kobalt Family
We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome british indie rock trio, The Wombats, to the Kobalt family and to help them release and publish their very first independent album — “Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life.”
The UK band has inked both a worldwide publishing and recordings agreement which offers them a full range of services including digital and physical distribution, global marketing and campaign coordination, synch licensing, and more, while the publishing signing includes worldwide publishing administration for all future works.
The band came together back In 2003, as lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew “Murph” Murphy, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen, and drummer Dan Haggis met at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA), and formed The Wombats. Three years later, they released their platinum-selling debut album A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation, featuring hits like “Moving to New York,” “Kill the Director,” and “Let’s Dance to Joy Division.”
By 2011, the Wombats hit #3 in the UK with their second album, This Modern Glitch, followed by their landmark “comeback” album, Glitterbug, in 2015. Like its predecessor, Glitterbug climbed to the top of the UK charts, sitting at #5, and became the first Wombats record to register on US charts
The trio more recently released the first single from “Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life,” their upcoming February 2018 album — “Lemon to a Knife Fight.”
Murphy previously said in an interview NME that the song “came around after my wife and I had a huge argument on Mulholland Drive. I’d been watching tons of David Lynch too, the song just kind of fell out of me.”
The video for the single actually just premiered today!
Paul Hitchman, President of Kobalt Music Recordings, said of the deal, "We are all very excited about the new Wombats record. It may just be the best of their career so far and we are proud that the band and their team chose Kobalt as their partner for their first independent release. We look forward to working in partnership with the band and their management on a very creative campaign for the record."
“We're extremely excited about our new relationship with Kobalt,” said Matthew “Murph” Murphy, lead vocalist and guitarist of The Wombats. “It's great to be working with such a dynamic, creative, and most importantly, forward-thinking company. We feel like we are in excellent hands and are enamored by their unwavering belief in the band, as well as our new album.”
We can’t wait to see what incredible ventures come from this partnership. Once again, Wombats — welcome to the Kobalt family!
